Parking a van

Vans largely follow the same rules as cars, but height, length, weight and loading zones create extra pitfalls.

An ordinary van under 3,500 kg is a light vehicle and follows the same parking rules as a car: park where there is no parking or stopping prohibition, and pay and document where required.

Restrictions that often affect vans

  • Car-park height. Many car parks have a maximum height of around 1.9–2.1 m. Check the entrance sign.
  • Length and markings. A long van that extends outside its bay or into the next bay may receive a control sanction.
  • Weight limits. Some facilities, especially roof decks, have weight limits.

Loading zones

Many city centres have signed loading zones for vans and lorries. They are often time-limited and only apply while loading or unloading, not for ordinary parking while you run an errand. Parking there without loading can result in a fee.

Residential areas and housing associations

Many housing associations and residential areas restrict parking larger vehicles, particularly overnight. Check the signs and local house rules first.

In short: park a van as you would a car, but pay special attention to clearance, keeping the whole vehicle within the markings, and using loading zones only for loading. Incorrect parking can lead to a fine or removal.
