An incorrectly parked car — what can you do?
Someone is blocking a driveway or parked unlawfully? You can report it, but cannot issue a fine or arrange towing yourself.
Enforcement belongs to the municipality or police on a public road, and to the parking operator on private land. Your role is to report the problem, not take the law into your own hands.
Someone blocks your vehicle or driveway
Try to find the driver first. If that does not work:
- If the vehicle is in front of your driveway or blocks you on a public road, contact the municipal parking authority. It can issue a fee and arrange removal.
- If urgent — for example, it blocks emergency access or creates danger — contact the police.
Incorrectly parked on a public road
Contact the municipality; many offer a reporting service. A parking officer assesses the situation and may issue a parking fee.
Incorrectly parked on private land
At a private parking space, for example a housing association or shopping centre, contact the parking company engaged by the landowner. It may issue a control sanction.
Do not do this yourself
- Do not write your own “fines”.
- Do not block the vehicle in.
- Do not damage or tow the vehicle yourself.
In short: find the driver if possible; otherwise report it to the municipality/police on public land or the parking company on private land. Self-help is rarely worth the risk.
