Motorcycles, trailers and motorhomes
Can several motorcycles share a bay? Does a trailer need its own ticket? Where is the line between parking and camping in a motorhome?
Parking rules apply to motor vehicles and their trailers, including motorcycles, trailers and motorhomes. The starting point is the same as for a car: follow signs, markings and the Traffic Rules, and pay where required.
Motorcycles and mopeds
Motorcycles and mopeds must be placed inside a marked bay where one is provided, in the bay’s direction. Their size does not exempt them from the rules. Several motorcycles or mopeds may share one marked bay (Parking Regulations section 24). They normally pay at charged spaces, though many municipalities allow two- and three-wheelers to park free, especially in resident zones. Check your city guide.
Trailers
A trailer follows the same parking rules as a car. If attached to a vehicle with valid parking, it follows that vehicle’s entitlement. A detached trailer is a separate vehicle and must be paid for, or have its own permit, where required.
Motorhomes
A motorhome is parked like any other motor vehicle: within the markings and at the normal rate in a charged area. There is no national scheme for motorhome bays. The important distinction is between parking and camping: leaving the vehicle is parking, while overnight stays and camping equipment are often regulated locally or by the landowner. Check the signs and local city rules.
Supplementary signs for vehicle groups
A main sign can be limited to a vehicle group by a supplementary symbol, such as a motorcycle/moped, caravan with towing vehicle, or motorhome. The supplementary sign is valid only with the main sign and states who the restriction applies to.
